In my 20 years working with struggling readers, whose deficiencies were as numerous and varied as they were, I have found that most are more willing to put forth the effort to make improvements in reading when they are having fun learning and are earning rewards as they progress.
I have also learned that nothing motivates students to read like knowing how to read. My tutoring technique dismisses traditional remedial reading instruction. Instead, I use a prevention- intervention framework that is made up of five components: assess and diagnose, teach/reteach, practice, apply and reassess. This method focuses on prevention and intervention of reading problems by finding out what each reader needs to learn, planning instructions to meet those needs, and provide instruction consistently, explicitly, and repeatedly until those needs are met. It effectively enables struggling readers to become independent and capable readers.
