Hello! I’m Maxwell, a senior at Hunter College majoring in Psychology, born and raised in NYC. I am a tutor who can teach from elementary through early college-aged students. I specialize in English, SAT prep for Reading and Writing, and other non-academic subjects like Chess and Brazilian percussion. Through my music, I’ve performed in various venues, including the Apollo Theater, and met people like Hillary Clinton and Idris Elba.
I have a semester of experience tutoring high school students in English. The tutoring consisted of various topics and skills, including grammar rules, text analysis, essay writing, and researching to name a few, making me well-rounded in tutoring different kinds of English courses and helping with various assignments. I also have experience in creative writing and spoken word as a semi-finalist in the Urban Word NYC spoken word competition. When it comes to SAT prep, I took the old SAT and scored a 1940, which equates to the 90th percentile on the new SAT. I’m happy to teach other students my tips and tricks for scoring higher on the exam.
Outside of English, I have a year of experience as a College Coach, a mentor for high school students as they navigate the transitional period between high school and freshman year of college.
I have over 10 years of experience playing chess in school and online, both recreationally and competing in tournaments, which allows me to teach beginners in chess. I also have 3 months of experience in teaching a classroom of 3rd-5th graders to play Brazilian percussion instruments. I’ve been playing Brazilian percussion instruments for over ten years, during which time I’ve gotten to play with the Roots, as well as perform at places like the Apollo Theater and Ted Talks Live at Town Hall.
My hope is that I will be able to make lessons more accessible for students. I also hope that they will come to enjoy learning more as we progress through lessons. My tutoring/teaching style is most like that of the facilitator. Students have unique learning styles, so I’ll mold my teaching to the style that suits my student best, guiding them along the way instead of just providing answers. I also like incorporating real-life examples into my work, pulling from different types of media to help illustrate my points and connect with my students. My main goal is to give my students the confidence and independence to thrive in all aspects of their life, from academics to extracurriculars.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
