My first tutoring gig was at Bard High School - where I was enrolled as a student. I wasn't a teacher, but that's exactly the potential I saw in tutoring. Tutoring lets us approach learning from a totally different angle than we do in the classroom and fill in the gaps in our understanding in a way that suits each individual. In my ten years of working as a tutor, I have seen time and time again the value of a relaxed, informal learning environment, and treasure those moments when a simple conversation opens a student's eyes to a new idea.
Rigorously trained in argumentative writing by the Cinema Studies, English, and Philosophy Departments at the University of Chicago, I specialize in tutoring all aspects of the academic essay. My students come away from a session with me not only ready to move on to the next step of their current assignment, but armed with straightforward writing strategies they will take with them for the rest of their academic career. So much of writing is identifying simple, intuitive questions raised by the subject matter, and my diverse background in the humanities (from philosophy to critical theory to the arts) allows me to help my students ask just those questions.
Looking forward to working with you!
