I was a reporter and editor for five years before shifting into education, first as an ESOL instructor and later as director of academic programs. My most recent position as director of strategic partnerships meant working with college and corporate partners to bring education and other resources to students.
Of course, being a reporter required an excellent command of the English language and the ability to write in a manner that was engaging, informative, and accurate, whether it was covering formal events, or random occurrences such as when a crocodile cornered a farmer in the mangroves.
I brought a student-focused approach to instruction in the classroom, ensuring that my lessons were geared toward helping students realize their goals as they gained confidence in the English language or other subject areas. The lessons were sufficiently challenging, with students responsible for 70% of the heavy lifting. In other words, it was less about me, more about them.
What a nice privilege it was to become director, coaching and supporting a group of dedicated educators. Equally satisfying was observing the academic services offered to students grow and improve even to include courses that would help them become prepared for matriculating into college.
I am excited now to be able to apply skills earned in journalism and as instructor along with those gained in education management. Let's work at improving those English skills or strategize about that essay due soon. Setting goals, gaining feedback on that cover letter or resume, as well public speaking tips and mock job interviews, are just some of the possibilities.
