As a tutor/mentor for the East Bay Consortium, I served as a bridge between students, families, and staff. I resolved cultural barriers such as language, microaggressions, and ethnocentrism displayed within low income public schools. Specifically, I analyzed survey data (i.e. graduation rates, family education, community resources etc.) found in Black and brown youth and implemented measures (i.e. home visitations, college workshops, and field trips) that helped develop empathetic and supportive relationships between families of color and the education system. This included a Saturday Program in which I constructed lesson plans to a total of 40+ students selected to enhance their math skills (i.e. Geometry and Algebra). I also worked for Quality Tutoring Services in Orange County where I provided at home tutoring support for students facing personal challenges such as a disability (i.e. autism) or child care.
My teaching style is relatively flexible and based upon a student's intellectual abilities and their background. I like to structure my lessons in coherence to a student's likes and desires so that it is engaging and relevant to their current reality.
