Within the accumulated 5 years of college and high school level English tutoring, two years of it had been spent officially within the college level. I started tutoring during my senior year at Lindbergh High School as a way to help out my peers as they were struggling to make grade. My peer tutoring extended to South Seattle College where I was again, peer tutoring with peers and students outside of class. It wasn't until I had transferred to Western Washington University that I opened up a tutoring service on campus inside the campus' library, during which I was awarded "The National Society of Collegiate Scholars" for my excellent grades during the Fall Quarter of my first year. Tutoring for me is less about me telling the student how or what to write, but more about hearing the student and learning from them their form of articulation. I've stuttered all my life, so when verbal articulation seemed to be impossible, I would look towards writing to bridge my words. My strongest strength would be my ability to bring out written articulation within all of my students.
I've completed a Major in English and am finishing my BA at Seattle University. I've taken well over fifteen English courses shared between Western Washington University and Seattle University. Of the fifteen-plus courses taken, I've taken an abundance of poetry, both written and oral, fiction writing, and non-fiction writing, which includes memoirs and self-reflections. Each class involved open discussions of my and peers' writings. My engagement during this time awarded me extra-credit from my given teacher, which I felt increased my ability to help further my tutoring experience. I've been the chief-editor for John Eklof's first publicized book, "There is Love is Revolution" and am a renowned Spoken Word poet, which I've been doing for ten years now.
My tutoring style involves a handful of listening to what the student wants to say, seeing examples of how they write, and building the best lessons for their individual learning ability. My patience is as vast as my knowledge of the English language. Parents, feel free to let me know anything that you feel will be the best way to bring the most out of the student.
