Let’s face it, pre-calculus procedures for solving problems are intimidating. Even if you have a strong background in math, this type of problem-solving can seem very confusing without clear directions to take. Pre-calculus is an extremely important math class to achieve at your best since it is setting you up for your next step in math. Determining rates of change, predicting mathematical amounts, and being able to explain the quality of change, all require the understanding of a specific set of guidelines. This is the only way you are going to be able to comprehend the proper steps needed to get to the final solution of the problem. This type of math takes it to a new level as you are expected to make connections with the concepts of change and understand the language of symbolism in algebra that designates change. Additionally to these foundational skills, you must be able to develop the tools needed for solving complex equations. This involves things such as understanding line tangents in reference to a cure or determining the area of a planar region. These are only a few of the things one must understand to find success in their pre-calculus course.
Pre-calculus is a course that most students will start to work with their junior year of high school. This is known to be one of the hardest years of a high school student’s life because of everything they have to accomplish. College applications are due, which means your child is also preparing to take the ACT, they have their extracurriculars, social life and on top of that a difficult course load. The icing on the cake is the fact that they now have to take a pre-calculus course. Math is universally known as a subject that gives most students a ton of problems. All of us are not great with numbers, especially when equations start using letters or you have to incorporate a calculator. You know that math is going to be a challenge when it is ok to use a calculator. This is something that trips several students up within this course. We think that using a calculator will make things easier but in fact, it can make them harder.
There are certain functions that you need to memorize so that you are getting the right answer. If you miss one thing or put something in the wrong way the entire answer will come out wrong. The worst feeling in the world is to use your calculator on a question, think that you have it right and then the multiple choice answers are nowhere near what you go. This can be depleting but it can also be eliminated. When it comes to the calculator it is only as useful as you are, so you need to truly understand how to use it.
