I graduated with a Bachelor’s in English and minor in Asian Studies from Brigham Young University in 2016. I spent my final year of my undergraduate degree in mainland China, completing an intensive Chinese language program. For the first semester, I was directly enrolled at one of the top universities and then interned at a local non-profit the following semester. After several years of working in both marketing and customer experience, I decided to go back to school to complete prereqs for med school. Because my plans were set back another year due to COVID-19, I decided to earn another undergraduate degree in Biotechnology so that after a couple semesters of additional science courses, I can then work in a medical lab for a year before matriculating into med school.
My experience as a tutor began while I was a freshman at BYU. For personal enrichment, I took a couple of tutoring courses, which led to me earning a CRLA Tutoring Level I Certification. For the rest of my time as an undergrad, I volunteered as a tutor, mostly helping students in general college chemistry. I also spent several years as a teaching assistant for a religion professor whose focus was entirely upon writing assignments; thus, I both graded and spent a lot of time helping students improve their writing skills. Then while in China, I spent some of my free time teaching young Chinese students (about ages 7-8) English. Thereafter, once I began working in customer experience, half of my job was to train thousands of employees across the globe on customer experience science and principles. Since I’ve been back in school full-time, I didn’t formally take on a teaching or tutoring role; however, I’ve found that I have often informally served as a tutor for classmates in my study groups.
I love learning and then sharing that knowledge with others. During my tutoring classes at BYU, I realized that my main purpose as a tutor is to teach my students to become independent learners. As such, I do not focus on rote memorization of learning material. Rather, I focus on helping my students master core concepts and learn effective ways to put not just those concepts into practice, but also future ones.
