An Educator, Historian, Musician, Leela has taught History and has also served as an
Administrator in the Public Schools. She has lectured in some of the most prestiges
universities in this country and abroad. She has guest lectured at Amherst, Yale, Brown,
Princeton, Harvard, Oxford, and The University of Virginia. She has taught at The
University of North Texas, Lewis University, Benedictine University, University of
Houston, North American University, Mountain View College, Richland College, Houston
Community College, Austin Community College, Governors State University and at the
Harold Washington College. Leela is a Gilder/Lerhman Fellow of American History.
Leela has for many years, performed solo concerts of Negro Spirituals, in many venues
throughout this country and abroad. She has served as the Associate Conductor of the
Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Student Conductor Lane College Concert
Choir and many church and other civic chorales.
Her formal education stems from three Historically Black Colleges, Lane College,
Tennessee State University and Texas Southern University. She is also a graduate of
Marian College and Kaplan University Concord Law School.
