I have been tutoring Chinese and Intensive Chinese one-to-one for over 30 years. I taught Mandarin at Dartmouth College as a Senior Lecturer from 2005-2011 and have taught Chinese at two prep schools, Suffield Academy (CT) and the Hockaday School (Dallas, TX). I use the same inspiring, high-energy methods of teaching Mandarin and Intensive Mandarin that I do coaching long distance runners. I infect students with tremendous self-confidence so that they fall in love with the Chinese language. And the enthusiasm inspires their parents as well. While it is challenging, students find it quite fun. I empower student learning by focusing first on the spoken language. I am an expert in teaching Mandarin pronunciation and tones. Speaking drives the learning of the other skills of listening, writing, and reading. By building confidence to learn Mandarin, considered to be one of the hardest subjects, students gain focus and discipline that they apply to other subjects.
