About Sara

Writing is hard--I'm here to help! I am passionate about helping all kinds of writers find greater confidence, clarity, and joy in their work. Whether you're a high school student drafting college application essays, a college student writing challenging course papers, or a doctoral candidate organizing a complex dissertation project, I will work with you to develop a tutoring plan that addresses your specific needs and outlines clear, manageable steps for moving forward. I bring warmth, humor and compassion to every interaction, ensuring that my students leave each session feeling confident, encouraged, and excited to keep writing!

As a lifelong creative and scholarly writer, I know that writing often feels frustrating and mysterious. Students may feel hesitant to ask questions about this difficult practice: "How do I get my paragraphs to flow more logically? What is a thesis statement, and does my paper include one? What's the difference between description and analysis? What verb tense should I use?" When you work with me, there are no silly questions. We'll discuss whatever's on your mind with candor and clarity, and I'll help you find writing handbooks and online resources that address any writing concern.

I have 8 years of experience teaching literature and writing at the University of Texas, where I completed my PhD in English in 2015. I have over 12 years of experience providing individual tutoring for writers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and experience levels, including adult literacy learners, English language learners, students with learning disabilities, advanced undergraduate students, undergraduate athletes, and graduate students in all disciplines. As Graduate Writing Coordinator at UT's University Writing Center, I have developed instructional programming to help both teachers and students face the challenges of writing in new, unfamiliar genres, such as lab reports and grant proposals. I am comfortable helping with writing projects in any discipline, including business and STEM fields. I also offer subject-matter tutoring in humanities fields (such as literature, history, philosophy, and religious studies), general support with study skills and time management, grammar instruction, and ESL instruction. Please get in touch to discuss how I can help you!
