I have a Masters in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages from Lancaster University in the UK, allowing me to approach language teaching from both a scientific and classroom oriented perspective. Also, as my undergraduate degree is in English, I am well versed in the mechanics of both several academic and creative writing forms.
I have been tutoring ESL privately in Austin for a year now. I am conversational in Spanish and know some basic Mandarin, however my standard teaching approach is to avoid translation and keep learners in one mental language during instruction. This way, the mental pathways supporting English can be built independently of one’s native language, thus enabling fluency. I also craft lessons according to each student’s specific needs, including amble time to explore areas of language (e.i. culture, idioms, slang) which students may be curious about or struggling to understand.
