My name is Dr. Maria Perrotta. As an educator, I believe academics is not just about learning new information or skills it’s about changing the way that you see and process the world. The primary reason I teach is to leave a legacy. Passing on knowledge and helping my students achieve their personal and professional goals enables the opportunity for them to contribute to their community and in turn help others. I also like to share my enthusiasm for Psychology with others. I like to inspire my students to achieve their goals. I personally enjoy learning because the more knowledge I gain, the better I can serve each of you. In the classroom, I love it when my students have their “aha” moments and make the connection between their experience and the concepts that we are discussing in a course. I hope those moments motivate you to learn more and keep you connected to the course!
I would like to provide you with a bit of background information on myself. I am from Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health/Community Health from Slippery Rock University, a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Slippery Rock University, Master of Education degree from Slippery Rock University, and a PhD in Health Psychology from Walden University.
While pursuing my first Master's degree, I was awarded a Graduate Assistantship in the Academic Advisement department at Slippery Rock University. This allowed me to have my first experience teaching at the college level, in that I was a co-facilitator of a First-Year Studies course for freshman students. I have also been a faculty member at both a ground campus and online campus since 2010 teaching various Psychology courses. What makes my situation unique is that I have also been an online student and can relate to your experience! I want each of you to know that I am always here for you and invite you to reach out to me at any time. Please remember that I have been where you are!
I have been employed by a Social Services Agency for the past fifteen years as a Therapist in an Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program. This program is very unique in that it is located in a high school. In fact, it is the only one of its kind in the state of Pennsylvania. I facilitate group, individual, and family therapy on a daily basis. I am also a Psychiatric Consultant in the Emergency Room at a local hospital.
Prior to my current employment, I was a Director at a Social Services agency in Pennsylvania in which I was responsible for the daily operations of a foster care, adoption, and truancy program for teenagers. I love to teach and that is where my passion lies. I am the mother of two sons, Sammy (age 17) and Brady (age 15). I am an exercise and fitness enthusiast and always try to lead an active lifestyle. I look forward to working with you!
