My tutoring experience began when I was an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh where I participated in a student-run service organization in which I tutored Somali-Bantu refugee students in a variety of K-12 subjects that they were struggling in. This experience was so inspiring such that shortly after graduating, I decided to go back to school to earn a master's degree in Middle Grades Education (grades 4-8) with additional certifications in Middle School Mathematics and Middle School English from Temple University. I have also worked both as a substitute teacher and a student teacher within the School District of Philadelphia.
What I love most about tutoring is that I am able to provide students with one-on-one help so that they gain the confidence and skills they will need to achieve in school and subsequently tackle the real world. Sometimes all a blossoming student who resides in an urban community needs is some positive reinforcement that they "can." We live in a society that does not always engender this sort of encouragement, and that is why so many students become disillusioned and drop out of school. As a tutor, I will do everything I can to help students stick through school and find their place in this world.
I recently passed the Middle School Mathematics and English Praxis exams to become certified to teach Math and English in grades 4-8. I have had experience as a student teacher in 6th Grade Math at a middle school in northeast Philadelphia. I have also worked as a long-term substitute teacher for a high school Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry classroom. Additionally, in my past tutoring experiences, I have mentored students in K-12 Mathematics subjects.
I would love to be able to help you or your children in academic areas that they may be struggling in! I live in the South Philadelphia area but am willing to travel outside of the area for in-home or out-of-home based tutoring. I look forward to hearing from you!
