Hi! My name is Serena and I am a 20 year old female currently continuing her education at the State University of New Paltz as a Junior going for my Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Asian Studies. I have studied the Japanese language for 3 years continuing onto 4 and have reached working proficiency. I have tutored English (as well as the English language) to Japanese students. These Japanese students were studying abroad at my university (SUNY New Paltz) to expand on their English speaking skills and learn more about American culture. I volunteered to be a teacher’s aid at SUNY New Paltz last year in an international ESL class that consisted of students from Japan, China, and Korea. I also tutored a Korean international student one-on-one that also wished to learn more about America and the English language. I have been compensated by my university to complete these in depth tutoring sessions, however that in no way alters my quality of performance and motivation when it comes to helping others succeed.
I understand it can be frustrating to learn new things quickly sometimes while retaining them for long-term memory, but it is important to take into account the student’s learning preferences. If a student learns better through sound, writing, speaking, hands-on, or just pure repetition I will take all of that into account when tutoring.
