Peace! My name is Tommi, and I am a fourth year Feminist Studies Ph.D. student, Eugene Cota-Robles Fellow, and Teaching Assistant at the University of California at Santa Cruz. My teaching evaluations have been incredible since I started teaching in Fall, 2016, and I can make them available to you should you choose me as your/your child's tutor.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Sociology from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in 2012 after returning as a non-traditional adult student. I also received an A.A.S. in Surgical Technology in 2009.
I started tutoring in 2009 when I returned to college. After graduating, I developed curriculum for a "high school dropout recovery program" where I taught pre-GED and college-prep social studies, science, reading, writing, and math to students who had been pushed-out of both public and alternative high schools.
I have an array of teaching and learning experiences, and I teach, think, and learn across many disciplines within the humanities (such as gender studies, history, literature, philosophy, and comparative religion) as well as the sciences (including the life sciences, and the applied science of medicine).
As someone who is sensitive to and very aware of the racial disparities in public, private, and charter school education, I prioritize students of color, especially Black-identified students. I believe in practicing patience, persistence, and encouragement toward a mutually agreed upon goal.
I also prioritize trans* and queer-identified students, as I know how important it can be to have someone who is not only aware of but understanding of the many issues trans* and queer-identified students face everyday. These things really do affect ones desire and motivation to learn, and I am aware of these things on a personal and academic level.
