Hello, I’m Tom. I am seasoned professional with over 35 years of experience in using mathematics to solve business problems. From my experience, I’ve realized just how important professors, mentors and tutors have been to me to be successful though out my journey. People willing to take the time to transfer their knowledge or go the extra mile to help answer questions and get through problems have made all the difference which is why I enjoy tutoring!
A lot of students may not perform well in math because the subject can sometimes be difficult to relate to. I can help make the subject more approachable by teaching students about the fact that many math skills are used in everyday life. For example, this can be as simple as teaching them how to use basic math for banking and cooking. It can also be more complex as teaching them how to use statistics to differentiate between different baseball players, or to use geometry to decorate a house. Once students are able to gain more of an appreciation for a subject's uses, they tend to enjoy the subject more and subsequently perform better in their classes.
My aim is to instill a methodical approach to solving problems, to develop a versatile and confident student. I will help students overcome the challenges of a new curriculum, and I am able to provide real-world additional knowledge from my experience in industry. I believe every person's mind works differently. As a result, everyone learns differently.
My biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to adapt to the pace of the student when explaining fundamental concepts. I find from my own experience, that people learn things differently and at different paces; when students struggle with a subject, it’s usually because their learning style conflicts with the style or pace with which it is being taught. Tutoring one on one gives the opportunity to learn at the student’s optimal pace. As the student begins to show understanding of the concepts, I will then begin to incorporate more challenging problems as the student progresses in his/her learning. I encourage students to think out loud. It helps me learn how best to help. I also believe thinking out loud helps create an environment in which the student feels comfortable making a mistake. Students learn a mistake is simply an opportunity to learn.
I Know that Mathematics can be intimidating for many people. We use math in almost every area of our lives. A good foundation in mathematics can actually make our day to day lives simpler. Everybody struggles now and then, but quality math tutoring can make all the difference in the world. Strong skills in math are the cornerstone of many professions, trades, and pursuits.
