I'm Thomas! I graduated magna cum laude from Western Michigan University where I earned my bachelor of science in psychology. I currently work for Northwestern Michigan College as a tutor in the math and science centers and also do 1-on-1 tutoring sessions in the main office. I am also a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center, where I help students of various ages in Math, Science, English, Reading, Writing, and ACT Prep.
What I really enjoy about tutoring is helping students become confident and self-sufficient in their abilities. Once I see a student become more confident, I know that they will be on their way to becoming an A student. However, from personal experience, I've learned that before students can become confident and self-sufficient, they need to have an established rapport with their tutor. A vital part of the tutoring process is the tutor/student relationship. I understand that it's natural for a student to be nervous the first couple of sessions, and I try to do my best to make them feel at ease by asking about their passions, interests, or even just what they did in school this week. Having your student comfortable with you as a tutor is a huge indicator on their success.
