About Francis

I recently retired from the University at Albany where I was a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics for 20 years. Since then, I have been continuing to teach my introductory statistics course online as well as providing ESL tutoring to refugees from Somalia. I am also a student! I have been taking Italian lessons online for a few years now, so I am quite familiar with how difficult it can to be to understand things that others consider 'easy'.

Right now I am working on my own statistics textbook, designed with the math-phobic student in mind, which makes exclusive use of the passenger and crew data from the Titanic. Aside from being a fascinating example, readers will gain enough familiarity with the data that they know in advance if an answer seems to make sense.

We are in a world where statistical literacy has never been more important, and I am grateful that I can help people acquire that skill.

I am available for help in high school or college level probability and statistics courses. In addition, I can assist with preparation for the math portion of either the SAT, ACT or GRE. I had a perfect math score on the GRE when I took it in the 1990s.

Do you have 2 or 3 or 4 students working together in a pandemic pod? I am happy to work with small groups as well, at the same rate.

Here is a testimonial from a recent university student:

"I am impressed how well you have taught these concepts online! I was convinced I had to be in a classroom; As such, your ability to teach virtually and online has been nothing but impressive to me.

Words can't express how grateful I am to you in helping me to understand this topic...I feel like that scared kid who mastered the surface dive and swam down and touched the floor of that icky pond. I mastered my fear and earned a respectable grade. I can't predict that i will keep all the information in my head, but my fear has been broken..... and you helped me to succeed, and learn!
