For seven years, I have supported students on various skills levels in English reading and writing. For college and high school students, I supported them in learning how to analyze text using historical and author biographical references. As a writer, I help them understand the basics of storytelling that exists in all mediums and teach them how to apply it in literature. My students come out of our sessions and meetings learning how to apply literary concepts such as tone, point of view, mood, theme, character development, etc.
Since college, I have advised students and professionals in their writing whether it's from essays to composing emails. While in Americorp, I was trained in the Reading Corps MInnesota literacy tutor model fit for both english speakers and ESL (English as Second Language).
While working in the school system as a substitute teacher, I also trained and worked as a college prep tutor for the national AVID program, an organization to determined to get middle school and high school students ready for college by teaching them organization and communication/team work skills and applying them in a classroom setting.
In college, I study and minored in Japanese language. I still use it to this day interacting with native speakers and even helping two ESL students from Japan adjust to American school life in Charles County, Maryland. I have also taught ESL Biology as a long-term substitute teacher in Alexandria Public Schools to mostly Spanish speakers. I am currently learning Spanish as a beginner but am more than happy to apply what I know to help other Spanish speakers learn English.
