Good teachers get compliments from students all the time, and so many of them are heartfelt and memorable. Typically there are one or two compliments that teachers never forget. The best compliment I ever received was from a rising 11th grader at a summer camp for academic enrichment. We were studying Romeo and Juliet's opening sonnet and a student exclaimed as we finished deconstructing the closing couplet, "Gee Mr. Bryant you could get a rock to understand and like Shakespeare." That was early in my career and I have endeavored to bring that kind of enthusiasm for learning to each and every one of my students. I have taught English Language Arts classes at the middle and high school levels, and composition and literature courses at the college level. After teaching for 30-plus years, I served as an assistant principal at a middle school for three years, then at a high school for four years. Just before retiring I spent one year as a principal at a K-8 school. I have been tutoring part-time for eight years. In addition to teaching full-time as my day job, I have always and continue to earn extra income as a photojournalist. In addition to the students I work with online, my tutoring experiences have taken me to into schools and homes, where I've worked with youngsters as well as adults.
