About Dabian

Hi. I provide tutoring in English, ESL, ESOL, EFL, ESP, writing, literature, social studies, United States history, African American history, world civilization, film studies, screenwriting, and drawing. I have successfully worked with students of different backgrounds, cultures, and ages. If you are a client who wants to take your knowledge and abilities to the next level, I am the tutor for you.

I am a patient and kind teacher and tutor. Teaching and tutoring make a difference in the lives of other people. No matter how challenging your work may seem, you will have my support and encouragement. I welcome your input, and I enjoy seeing you build your confidence, make progress, and meet your goals. I am also a global citizen who respects and values people from various cultures, backgrounds, and ages.

I have earned a Ph.D. in English (Morgan State University), a 120-Hour TEFL certification (myTEFL/Footprints Language Education), an Intermediate Spanish Certificate (la Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca), an M.A. in African American Studies (University of Iowa), and more than 18 hours in graduate-level history.

My honors and awards include the Adele V. Holden Creative Writing Excellence Award (portfolio of screenplays) at Morgan State University, the Creative Minds in Cannes Internship at the Cannes Film Festival in France, the University Film & Video Association (UFVA) Graduate Student Fellowship, the Caroll Mills Young College Language Association (CLA) Study Abroad Scholarship, and the Sol Education Abroad Scholarship. I am a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society and the Golden Key International Honour Society.

I have taught more than 10 years at the college and high school levels, including English, writing, literature, U.S. history, African American history, world civilization, film studies, and screenwriting. I teach and tutor in these subject areas. I am also an artist who teaches drawing classes.

I have been a tutor on and off since my undergraduate years. I have provided private tutoring as well as tutoring in college writing centers and afterschool homework centers. I work with adults and children in English and other subjects. That includes ESL, ESOL, essay writing, grammar, literature, and writing your own stories.

During the second half of my career as an educator, I have witnessed too many young people being disqualified from opportunities and struggling to adapt to college-level work because they were weak in basic skills. Despite having graduated from high school, their reading, writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills were below high school level. Year after year, the problem has worsened. I am a teacher who can help prevent this from happening to you or your child.

My tutoring is tailored to fit your unique needs. My strengths include patience and the ability to help you understand and eliminate your mistakes. I also have a knack for breaking complicated tasks down into smaller, simpler parts. As a professional copy editor, I am also much sharper than most teachers and tutors when it comes to correcting mistakes in clarity, efficiency, grammar, and sentence structure.

My services as a copy editor, proofreader, and script analyst are also available. I have worked in these areas on a freelance basis since 2011. I edit all types of formal and informal writing for grammar, sentence structure, efficiency, and clarity. My work includes papers, books, articles, dissertations, M.A. theses, court transcripts, novels, short stories, novellas, websites, marketing materials, scripts (for visual storytelling). As a script analyst, I identify areas of improvement, such as formatting, clarity, and consistency.

My talents and skills also include poetry and art. I have written poetry since I was a child. I have let my students read and write silly parodies and compare poems to songs in the literature classes that I have taught. I have conducted poetry workshops for K-12 classes and community organizations.

I have been drawing since I was a toddler watching re-runs of the funny Batman TV series (way before my time) and trying to imitate what I saw. BAM! BIFF! KA-POW! I also imitated the drawings in a giant-size Batman coloring book that was just as tall as I was. As I got older, I drew other comic book characters and Transformers. I took art classes in high school and college. Later, I taught a drawing workshop (basic drawing and anime/manga) as part of the weekend and summer activities for an Upward Bound program.

I am a creative and versatile person whose interests are quite diverse. I am an artist, a screenwriter, and a poet. I like current and classic movies, television, and comics—especially action, comedy, sports, wrestling, martial arts, and anime. My huge kung fu collection includes the work of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Angela Mao, and the Venom Mob. I also have plenty of Shaw Bros, Golden Harvest, and American-made films. Some of my favorite anime are Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, and Bleach.

My adventures include ziplining in Mexico as well as screening my colleague’s short film and walking the red carpet twice at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Thank you for visiting my profile. I look forward to helping you on your journey!
