About Camila

My name Is Cam and I am an online Japanese tutor. Like you, I once had the dream of learning to speak Japanese! I began teaching myself Japanese in my spare time when I was a junior high school student, and continued my education for ten years through most of a PhD. I have lived in Japan for a total of three years in the cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, and Sapporo.

I have studied Japanese at the New York Japan Society, the University of Chicago, Waseda University, the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. I have a Masters degree in Asian Literatures, Cultures and Media with a focus on Japanese literature and media studies, and in 2017 I passed N1 of the JLPT. My percentile was 99.3.

I know firsthand the difficulty of studying this language, and my ability to tutor stems directly from my understanding of how I and my fellow Japanese language students learned. My perspective as an advanced learner can be advantageous—I have the "insider scoop" on how to learn Japanese as a non-native speaker and progress to a very high level.

I will structure our tutoring sessions to reflect YOUR individual goals as a learner. First we will discuss your background in the Japanese language, your interests in regard to the language and culture, and how you plan to utilize the language in the future.

I aspire to make our tutoring sessions fun, dynamic, and engaging with lively discussion of cultural topics. I understand the process of language learning as non-linear and focus on what is developing from moment to moment. Language learning is a profound transformation, and it is my goal as a tutor to facilitate this transformation and help you make connections as much as it is to explain textbook grammar points in a way that is easy to grasp. My goal is to challenge you and push you to get to the next level while encouraging you to have fun.
