My very first tutoring experience was for helping one of my classmates to pass his math placement test. He was in his early 30s but all he knew was basic math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. One day, he told me he had only 2-3 months left until his next placement test. Unfortunately, he could not only afford money for hiring a private math tutor for his test but also, he didn’t know where to start. Mathematics has always been one of my strongest subjects, so as soon as he told me about his situation, I told him that I would be happy to tutor him for free for his placement test. Honestly, it wasn’t easy for both us in the beginning. He had to spend his spare time doing a lot of assignments that I provided him with, and it was challenging for me to help him understand a lot of concepts in such a short time. However, we made it through to the end, and he was able to pass his math placement test with a much higher score than we aimed for. From this positive experience, I found my interest in teaching/tutoring people and this led me to other tutoring experiences from tutoring at small study groups to tutoring at an academic support center. I believe there’s no such thing as a learning capability and I am willing to help people learn as much as they want with my assistance. From these experiences, I think all that matters to someone’s achievement in learning is the time and efforts one puts into it.
