Hello!
I have been a tutor since 1989, helping students of all ages to excel in the fields of math and science. I have tutored students as young as third grade all the way up to those in college. My math courses have included: Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Statistics, Trigonometry, & General Math. I have also tutored science courses including: Biology, Advanced Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, & General Science.
As a former teacher, I taught 8th grade Life Science, Biology, Advanced Biology, and college-level Anatomy & Physiology for one year in a small town, Canton, Missouri. Following that, I taught 11 years at the 7th grade level teaching Life Science at Parkview Middle School in Ankeny, Iowa. I continued for another 7 years in Ankeny teaching Biology, Geology, & Astronomy to sophomores. I have had the privilege of meeting a variety of neat kids who want to do well in their classes, making this a very rewarding job.
Besides this, I have tutored college Biology & Algebra, in addition to elementary reading. I have also been trained to prepare students in taking the ACT test.
In 2003, I won the National Ohaus Award for Excellence in Science Teaching from the National Science Teachers Association. I had a great experience receiving this award as I got the opportunity to make a speech on stage at the National Science Teachers Convention in Philadelphia, explaining my Forensic Science project that I designed to teachers from all over the country.
Over these several years while tutoring, I have seen so much growth with my students. One student came to me a few weeks before his Chemistry final in a panic. He was getting a D+ in this course. I worked with him for 3 weeks, twice per week. In the 6 sessions that I worked with him, he brought his grade up to a B-. That was a superb accomplishment for him.
Many of my students have a similar success stories. As many parents have discussed with me, they felt that I had a connection with their child that most teachers haven't been able to address. Unlike their teachers that had other students disrupting class, or having particular needs, I work one-on-one with them to explain material in a simplified way that they can relate to. I never make their child feel unintelligent. The math & science have been involved lots of pictures, drawings, charts, hands-on activities, whatever is needed to understand the concept. Everybody learns material in a different way & I have the knowledge to modify their learning to meet their needs the best.
I hope you will contact me for tutoring your child. You will see that within a short time, they will become much more confident in their coursework & they have caught up with their peers.
