I was born and raised in Philadelphia and now reside in South Florida. I am an ESL/Spanish teacher who taught for the School District of Philadelphia for 35 years. I received a Bachelor's degree in bilingual elementary education from Temple University. I also received a Master's degree in Spanish from LaSalle University. I am certified to teach elementary education K-12, Spanish K-12, ESL K-12 and as a Program Specialist. The program specialist identifies ELL students, administers tests to establish English proficiency, places students in appropriate classes and monitors student progress.
Beyond the traditional classroom, I have tutored small groups of learners from kindergarten through adulthood in ESL and Spanish. Small group instruction allows me to meet the needs of students based on their goals and learning styles.
I am able to tailor instruction according to those learning styles, objectives and desired outcomes. A creative and engaging tutoring session provides a meaningful experience in which my students enjoy learning and feel successful and confident.
A crucial element of the learning process is parental and/or caregiver participation. Maintaining open communication with my students' parents is an integral part of my program. How can the parents support learning? What resources are available to them? How can I facilitate success in my students' school experience? What are the parents' expectations for the tutoring sessions? May I assist if they need to communicate with teachers and administrators?
Learning does not occur in a vacuum. The experience must be meaningful and challenging. I use drama, literature, art, music and science to enrich tutoring sessions. I look forward to working with future students so that they may feel successful and discover their true potential.
