About Karyn

My name is Karyn and I am a Montessori trained elementary teacher with over 18 years of teaching experience both in the US and overseas (Tokyo and Berlin). I have worked with students from ages 3-12 in both classroom and private settings. I have experience working with both the gifted population and student with special needs. As the mother and sister of dyslexics, I am passionate about offering appropriate intervention, remediation, and accommodations for students with dyslexia.

I have over 18 years of experience working with children as a Montessori teacher. Because I am Montessori-certified, the majority of the concepts which I teach use concrete materials for students to work with in order to gain the skills they need. The Montessori method stresses meeting the needs of each individual student by assessing where they are and using or creating materials to meet their needs. My enthusiasm for learning helps students to feel confident and understand the skills quickly.

Both the Montessori method and the OG approach to reading are multisensory, structured, sequential and cumulative. They are flexible and based on student mastery. We begin with an assessment of reading skills and plan the goals from there.

The Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction was developed in the early-20th century. It is language-based, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible. The Orton-Gillingham Approach has been in use since the 1930s. An intensive, sequential phonics-based system teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings. The method accommodates and utilizes three learning modalities, or pathways, through which people learn—visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

I really enjoy the advantage of teaching in a one-to-one setting and I feel that my patience, sense of humor, diligence, and educational knowledge makes me a great tutor. I am eagerly looking forward to working with your children.
