Hello future students and their families! My name is Alexa Muniz and I am excited to be a part of your learning journey. I grew up in Arizona where I often escaped the heat of summer by reading inside... and I may have developed a knack for Nintendo games as well. My liberal arts high school education prepared me for my undergraduate experience at Scripps College, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the United States, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies and Anthropology. I feel so lucky that my time at Scripps allowed me to study so many different subjects and even allowed me to spend a semester in Italy! When I graduated from Scripps I was left with all of this breadth of knowledge and a passion for learning and helping others.
That led me to where I am today. Since graduation I have worked at a Learning Center where I was trained in the Seeing Stars program, a multisensory cognitive approach to reading remediation. I have been able to help students like you increase their reading and comprehension skills. I focus on building up the underlying processes of reading so I can help you become as fluent and independent as possible. As a reading interventionist I have helped students make years of growth in reading in just weeks to help them reach their full potential. I love reading so much and I can’t wait to help you love it too. I have experience working with students of all ages and who have various difficulties in reading and all academic subjects. I have experience working one-on-one with student who have various diagnoses: dyslexia, hyperlexia, ADHD, auditory processing disorder, and autism spectrum disorder to name a few.
Although my specialty is reading remediation and reading comprehension I also apply the techniques I teach to helping students in all academic subjects. I can help your student with conceptualizing numbers and math, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, organization, study skills, and test prep. My goal is to build up your skill set and stamina to be as independent a student as possible.
But it’s going to take more than just me. As your tutor my philosophy will be one centered on collaboration and accountability. We will be in this together and I will cater my teaching/instruction to you as a student. I never try to fit my students into a mold of instruction,
but rather will mold my instruction to fit the learning needs of my students. I know that not all students are the same and therefore do not need the same instruction. My goal as a tutor is for my students to feel independence, success, and pride in their academics. I know that together we can get there and I hope to see you as my student soon. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about how I can help you on your journey and book a session today!
