10/26/2017: I'M NOT AVAILABLE AT THE MOMENT. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO REMOVE MY PROFILE FROM THE WEBSITE. SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE!
Hi, I'm Nguyen. I recently graduated from UCLA with honors with a Bachelor's degree in Biological Science. My experience (and interest) are on the following topics: Calculus (and below), Physics (Mechanics; Waves, Electricity, and Magnetism; Light, Fluids, Thermodynamics, and Modern Physics), Biology (topics can range from Marine/Terrestrial to Cellular), Biochemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Animal Behavior, Ecology, Evolution (Humans, Animals, Plants, and Medicine). Sorry for the long list but I wanted to be thorough :D. I love life science and could talk with you about any of those topics all day!
A little bit about my experience. I've tutored both middle school, high school, and college students. I have done both one-on-one and group sessions. I was trained to effectively and appropriately to pose questions to guide students to answer the question (not just me simply spilling the answer), identify areas that require more focus, give the appropriate feedback, to recognize and manage a conversation, and refer a distressed student to support resources.
I am mindful of my student’s socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, academic background (including parents’), and even the number of books they have at home, as these factors were proven to dramatically affect student’s learning outcome.
I also participated in educational research. Our research team focused on ways to improve a traditional lecture, which involves the instructor talking by themselves while students are dozing off (I’ve been to many of them myself haha). We implemented different ways to allow students to be more active in lecture, these included group work, class discussion, and students teaching each other. Of course, these implementations brought positive results. Our findings were presented at a research conference at UCSD. I was subsequently offered a teaching fellowship, where I traveled to local high schools to observe and provided help.
My tutoring style: I usually start my sessions with questions that my students have, whether it is from our previous session, new material, or from the homework. I always try to stick to the academic contents (with regard to student's needs) to plan out my sessions. Sometimes I try to bring interesting stories to help students engaged and to better internalize the material. Afterward, I always ensure time for students to practice the material on their own. My motto is to understand not to memorize!
I welcome any resources or suggestions students/parents can provide. I'm easy to reach and will always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!
I understand the struggle of being a student; therefore, it is my desire to inspire and challenge the student to embrace the various aspects of life sciences, to benefit students as much as possible. My ultimate goal is to help my students become successful in their class, get a firm foothold in their academic career to confidently advance toward the future.
