I am an experienced English and Creative Writing tutor with an MFA from The New School and an MA from Columbia University.
I believe that the focus of English education should be teaching students to engage with a text instead of teaching students one specific text. While we will cover and review books that students are learning about in class, my priority is to help students develop their analytical skills so they can apply what they learn to any media that they consume. I want students to learn that literature is alive, not something dead and in the past.
My goal as an instructor is to push students to think more deeply and complexly and for them to understand to move from “liking” and “not liking” a text to asking why they are reacting to a text in a certain way. I want students to be able to write about what they feel like they can engage with and for them to realize that their own perspectives and life experiences can bring something unique to their literary analysis.
