I offer a very high-level of tutoring that is far more comprehensive than what most tutors offer. In addition to my English degree from U.C. Berkeley, I am also close to completing my master's degree in Psychology from Santa Clara University. Most tutors only address, what I call "content"--meaning the content in the textbook or the content the teacher covers in the classroom. What is severely lacking in the approach of most tutors and tutoring companies is a focus on the internal "process" of learning. Process refers to the mental process that goes on in a student's mind while they are writing an essay, taking a test, reading or doing homework. These are two equally important areas and most tutors, lacking an education in psychology, are not able to address the student's internal process. Process impacts many vital areas, such as motivation and concentration, which are a essential to a student's success. Without a focus on process or training in psychology, many tutors will help a student's grades go up, but they also create a dependency relationship; this unhealthy dynamic means that, if tutoring stops, the students grades will go down again. In contrast, my approach has the ultimate goal of independence and empowerment for all of my students, allowing them to learn the skills necessary to eventually no longer need tutoring! I teach transferable skills that are relevant, not only for any future class, but also for any professional career and life, in general.
In addition to my education in writing, reading, and psychology, I also went through a formal tutor training program. I specialize in students in elementary, junior high, and high school, but I also work with younger students, college students, and adults, as well. I have a lot of experience with students with ADD/ADHD and learning disabilities. I particularly enjoy tailoring my teaching style to suit each unique individual. My motto is "Whatever it takes!" If it's humor that's needed, we'll use humor. If it's strict discipline and accountability for assignments that's needed, we'll do that. Everyone learns and thrives in different ways and for different reasons. My aim is to find what makes you or your child tick and expand on those strengths to help achieve your goals.
I have been incredibly privileged to have had a number of gifted teachers and tutors in my life, and I strive to give this same gift to others. I would be honored to help you or your child with any kind of academic need, along with related study skills, test-taking strategies, organization, motivation, and time management.
