Through my experiences in the Masters of Literature and especially the Masters of Composition programs, I have come to an understanding of both the pedagogical aspects of English composition and hand-on applications of writing and reading instruction. My work with student writing in tutorial positions has provided me with active involvement with students of all backgrounds of sociolinguistic styles. I am better able to diagnose specific reading and basic literary problems including those relating to initial reading and writing skills and can develop effective strategies for attacking these areas.
As my academic vitae shows, I am familiar with the integration of reading and writing from both rhetorical and pedagogical perspectives. I have found tutoring as a graduate student at SFSU and faculty at CCSF to be a rewarding experience as I witnessed these students becoming better and more confident writers while I developed increasingly useful strategies in aiding individual writers. My interest in teaching composition and learning skills has involved me in endeavors outside the requisites of the Masters of Composition program; I was a teacher’s assistant in a summer writing course and also completed a course in Socioeconomics in order to better understand and support our multicultural community.
