I went back to school late. Real late, like when I was 50! I was just taking math classes for fun at the local community college and landed a math tutoring job at a local high school. The teachers there encouraged me to get my Bachelor's degree, and become a math teacher. I got the degree, and even went on to get my Master's degree, but I never tried for a teaching credential, so instead, I got a job as a Long Term Substitute and actually taught for one and a half years that way!
While I loved being in the classroom, I prefer the one-on-one tutoring experience. It is easier to see a student's progress, and there is no better feeling, for both me and my student, when the light literally goes on and he/she gets it! I want my students to understand what they're doing, not just know a list of steps to go through to get the answer.
What can I say? I love math! Especially high school Algebra and Geometry. (Those are also the two subjects I taught as a substitute.) Algebra takes a lot of patience, and Geometry is a very visual math. Beware, though, that there is a lot of Algebra in Geometry!
