Until 5th Grade, I did not understand Math! Then I decided to really try. I gradually improved, and excelled in Middle and High School. In College, I majored in Economics and Math. I have used Math in my careers: Operations Research Analyst, and Plumbing Contractor.
Twelve years ago in Chula Vista, I became a volunteer Elementary School Teacher's Assistant in Math. It is fulfilling to help children learn something they can use to improve their life... for the rest of their life! I communicate well, and I understand Math well enough to explain in easy and common terms. Math is a language, and the Elementary School material is like 'vocabulary.' I like to give everyday examples to help students understand and see the benefit of this 'language.'
It is important to have good rapport with the student, and to always encourage for any effort. The students and I always get along well. They all call me, "Mr. Peter." As I continued volunteering, I became well known in the school. Students would approach me a year or two later, telling me about their progress. This is very gratifying, and lets me know I am having a positive influence. Two years ago, the school recognized me with their "Honorary Service Award" in front of the entire school.
Going forward, I'm here to help!
