Even though I worked for a reading summer camp when I was just a teenager myself, my love for teaching truly began approximately fifteen years ago while working as an Assistant Writing Teacher. My primary role was to teach detained, high school students, academic, social, and independent-living skills. Early on, I learned to manage a classroom by teaching the subject matter, along with replacement behaviors and using positive reinforcement techniques. I would introduce lesson plans in fun and creative way which kept my students engaged for longer periods of time. By keeping students actively engaged, this allowed them to carefully focus on the lesson at hand. I would often place my students into small groups so I could work more closely with the ones who needed extra help so they would not fall behind. Additionally, I held tutoring sessions after school, on most days, where students could come for help with class and homework.
So, I continued to work with children and families within the social service field for a few more years; however, I continued teaching. I used my skills to teach parenting classes for biological and foster parents of detained and placed youth. Some of the classes involved teaching various skills to the children of these family as well so everyone in the family would be set up for future success. Afterwards, I found an opportunity to teach English as a second language (ESOL) online using the Total Physical Response Method (TPR). Sadly, the program’s contract ended, but again that did not stop me from doing what I love most.
I wanted to make teaching a permanent career path but there was only one way I knew how. So, I first became a volunteer policy council member for the current school district that I work for. This opportunity led me to become a certified substitute teacher for grades K-12 as well as help my community fill in the gap for the “national teacher shortage.” I currently hold a valid substitute teacher permit which allows me to teach a variety of subjects to varying age groups. However, during the height of the recent Pandemic, I spent most of my time tutoring students online to help with the " COVID-19 learning loss."
Whether I am in a classroom or online, I do what is best for each student by carefully analyzing their strengths as well as areas for improvement. Next, the student and I will set educational goals together. Goals may vary depending on individual needs, but they can include: personalized learning, identifying common obstacles and errors, promoting independence in learning and improving academic scores over time. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson. I look forward to our first session together!
