My first experience tutoring came while attending the University of Southern California in 2005. There, I assisted fellow classmates in preparing for upcoming exams and found great reward in helping others gain confidence in their academics abilities. After graduation, I was presented with the opportunity to join a network of USC alumni providing tutoring services to the surrounding community. Through this network, I began tutoring elementary and middle school students in their homes, gaining more subject experience and acquiring a unique perspective on public and private education in Los Angeles. I found this type of work rewarding, especially when students achieved confidence in a previously challenging subject. Self-reliance and self-confidence for the student became tutoring goals for me during this time. This work eventually led to tutoring positions at learning centers, where I had the opportunity to tutor more frequently and with set groups of students. Having a regular schedule of students allowed me to keep up with the students' progress throughout the semester and school year, aiding in their academic development.
My high school career was spent at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a magnet school in Arlington, Virginia. I was accepted into TJHSST after excelling in math and science during my middle school years. At TJHSST, I completed a variety of math courses including Trigonometry, Algebra II, and AP Calculus. I have a strong foundation in these math courses, and continue to tutor them on the middle school, high school, and college levels.
Also while at TJHSST, I completed a variety of science courses including AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and Geosciences. The application and intertwining of math and science was an area of particular interest to me, and I continue to focus heavily on this concept in my tutoring with students.
At the end of my high school career in 2005, I achieved a score of 1400 out of 1600 on the SAT, as well as 770 on the SAT II Writing test and 760 on the SAT II Math 2 test. My success in these areas of testing has provided me a solid background for ACT and SAT tutoring. I teach ACT and SAT prep classes on a weekly basis, helping students improve their scores on all areas of the exams (math, reading, verbal, science, and essay.)
I look forward to working with students of all ages and academic backgrounds. I aim to build solid subject foundations to facilitate further study, as well as clarify difficult concepts in specific subject areas. The most important goal is to foster a student’s self-confidence, which they can carry with them through their academic career.
