About Joyee

They say it takes an expert about 10,000 hours to become a master at his or her craft. At this point in my career, I have logged that many to preparing students for college. As an educational consultant, I devote over fifty hours a week to help my students succeed in high school and college through academic coaching, test preparation services, and college admissions counseling. When not teaching, I spend my 'work time' on curriculum design, lesson planning, visiting colleges, networking with college admissions officers. In fact, I am a member of the two largest national organizations of college admissions counselors. For more information about College Admissions, please read the College Counseling subsection.

I am a traditional tutor in that I help students learn things that they may not understand in a typical classroom setting. However, I employ many non-traditional approaches to tutoring, including bifurcated tutoring sessions, or flipped learning. My specialties are math and math-based science subjects, test preparation, and college admissions counseling. However, I have helped in many other courses of study.

If you are looking for a test preparation expert, please consider the information below:

I am one of very few tutors in the world who has received a perfect 36 on the ACT and a 2400 on the SAT. In addition to the fact that I sit for the official ACT and SAT exam, I have designed curricula and coordinated programs for many different organizations across the country. Many of my students come to me after having spent thousands of dollars at other companies -- Kaplan, Princeton Review, Revolution Prep, Elite, among others -- and, sadly, I am not surprised. These programs often put a band-aid on a deeper issue. Unlike most classroom programs, I work with students holistically so that they can learn the foundations of English, reading, and math. I focus on the why's and how's so that my students can gain a deeper understanding of content that will be helpful not only for test day, but also for college.

In looking for the right tutor, you want to work with somebody who not only can help you with test scores, but somebody who can also help you plan your path to college. After all, good test scores are only part of the picture.

Disclaimer: I only accept students who are willing to put in the time and effort required to become a master learner. I insist on a initial consultation/trial lesson with all potential clients, because as I have discovered, not everybody is ready to commit to my method of teaching. I don't believe in 'cramming' or last-minute preparation, but for those who insist on short notice (test preparation -- less than two weeks notice; academic tutoring -- 1-2 nights before a major test), please note that my rates will be higher.
