Data Decoded – In-Person Tutoring Reveals Improvements from Academic Year 2023-24
The 2023-24 school year was one of exceptional growth and achievement for students participating in HeyTutor’s high-dosage, in-person tutoring program. With a focus on improving English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency across K-8 students, HeyTutor’s efforts in partnership with various districts have yielded significant results.
Tutoring Improves ELA and Math Proficiency
HeyTutor’s data-driven approach has been at the heart of the improvements in student proficiency in both ELA and Math. Across more than 16,000 students in 38 school districts, the average improvement in ELA assessments was 54%, while math assessments saw an average increase of 50%. These impressive gains, consistent across all measured grade levels (K-8), resulted from regular, ongoing tutoring throughout the year.
What sets HeyTutor apart is the sustained nature of this growth? The program was able to maintain and enhance student achievement during periods traditionally associated with learning loss, such as holiday breaks. This consistency speaks to the effectiveness of the high-dosage tutoring model, which includes a minimum of three weekly sessions, each lasting at least 45 minutes. Whether conducted one-on-one or in small groups, during school hours or as part of before/after-school programs, these sessions have proven crucial in keeping students engaged and progressing.
Students Experience Consistent Growth Throughout Year
The evidence of HeyTutor’s impact is especially compelling when examining the progression from baseline to end-of-year assessments across all districts. ELA scores increased by 27% from the beginning to mid-year, with an additional 21% improvement by the end of the year. Similarly, math scores saw a 22% rise from the beginning to mid-year, followed by a further 20% increase by year-end. In specific districts, the improvements were even more pronounced.
- In one district with 720 students and 85 bilingual tutors (a ratio of ~ 9:1), students in grades 3-8 demonstrated a 260% increase in average ELA scores, while students in grades 1-12 experienced an astonishing 400% improvement in math scores over the course of the year. These outcomes are especially notable given that 60% of the students served were from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and more than 30% were English Language Learners.
- In a district of 547 students participating in a 10-week program with 10 tutors (a ratio of ~ 55:1), students in grades K-12 had an average increase of 15.6% in ELA scores and 16.26% in math between mid-year and the end-of-year scores. Forty percent of students who participated in the program were economically disadvantaged and nearly 15% of students were English Language Learners.
- And, in a district with only 49 students and with one particularly highly experienced tutor, students in grades 3-5 showed a 45.27% increase in math scores between mid-year and the end-of-year scores.
Such significant gains in these critical content areas highlight the tailored and responsive nature of HeyTutor’s curriculum and instructional strategies. The results also reflect the effectiveness of the tutoring sessions as well as the students’ growing confidence and mastery of key concepts.
Positive Results Align with District Analyses
The effectiveness of HeyTutor’s program is further validated by its alignment with district and state assessments. HeyTutor’s assessment data closely mirrored that of district-administered tests, reinforcing the accuracy and reliability of their internal monitoring processes.
Through its high-dosage, in-person tutoring model, HeyTutor has not only helped thousands of students close learning gaps but also equipped them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in their academic journeys. Working with individual students or with school districts, HeyTutor continues to be a trusted partner in making tutoring accessible and available to the students who need it most. The 2023-24 school year demonstrates HeyTutor’s ability to drive meaningful and sustained improvements in student achievement, and its readiness to continue providing this critical educational service.
