Case Study: Sweetwater Union High School District

Since Spring 2023, Sweetwater Union High School District has partnered with HeyTutor to accelerate student achievement in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) across grades 7-12. Serving 26 schools with 113 in-person tutors, the program has supported more than 10,000 students through a combination of push-in and pull-out intervention services. Grounded in research-based practices and aligned with district curriculum and state standards, the partnership demonstrates how high-dosage, in-person tutoring embedded directly within the school day can drive measurable gains while strengthening classroom instruction.

At the heart of the program is a commitment to culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, multilingual learner support, and a collaborative approach that ensures students receive the quality education they deserve.

Sweetwater Program Model

HeyTutor’s model in Sweetwater blends push-in classroom support with pull-out and small-group interventions tailored to site-specific needs. Tutors work alongside classroom teachers to reinforce grade-level instruction, provide academic support, and deliver targeted interventions in Math and ELA. This flexible staffing model allows schools to adapt services to high-need populations, including multilingual learners requiring ELD support and bilingual translation.

Unlike virtual tutoring programs that can create barriers to engagement, Sweetwater’s in-person model builds authentic relationships. Tutors become trusted adults on campus, supporting classroom management, reinforcing lesson objectives in real time, and providing immediate feedback. Teachers consistently report that students feel safe asking tutors for help and benefit from having an additional educator in the room to monitor understanding and maintain momentum.

Math Outcomes

Across participating Sweetwater schools, students receiving HeyTutor support outperformed state benchmarks in Math on CAASPP assessments.

Key results include:

  • Math proficiency rates exceeding state benchmarks
  • Significant growth among multilingual learners receiving bilingual tutoring
  • Increased student confidence in grade-level problem-solving tasks
  • Gains among underperforming students receiving small-group interventions

Teachers noted particular impact in lower-level math classes, where tutors provided real-time support and additional practice opportunities, leading to improved conceptual understanding and classroom participation.

Program Impact

The impact of the HeyTutor program at Sweetwater has been significant for tutors, students and and teachers. As tutor Kyla Perez explains:

“Working with HeyTutor has given me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students. Being able to assist students on their educational journeys is an amazing opportunity, I love coming to work every day. Not only do you have the opportunity to build a working relationship with the students, but you get to assist the teachers to assure the classes run smoothly. All of this allows the students to get the quality education that they deserve.”

The program aligns directly with the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Tutors provide reinforcement through push-in classroom assistance, targeted small-group interventions for students below benchmark, and individualized academic support when needed. Data tracking and dashboard reporting ensure accountability and allow administrators to monitor growth aligned to CAASPP, ELPAC, and other state assessments.

Additionally, HeyTutor’s curriculum integrates visuals, review check-ins, explicit vocabulary instruction, and research-based literacy strategies to make grade-level content accessible, particularly for multilingual learners.

Final Takeaways

The Sweetwater–HeyTutor partnership illustrates the power of embedding consistent, in-person tutors within a district’s MTSS framework. By aligning tutoring with classroom instruction, leveraging data dashboards for accountability, and prioritizing multilingual supports, the program delivers both academic growth and meaningful relationship-building.

Key takeaways include:

  • In-person tutoring drives stronger engagement and relationship-based learning than virtual-only models.
  • Push-in support enhances instruction while reducing teacher workload.
  • Small-group and pull-out interventions effectively accelerate students’ progress.
  • Multilingual, culturally responsive strategies ensure equitable access to grade-level content.

When tutoring aligns with great teaching, students thrive, and Sweetwater’s measurable outcomes demonstrate what is possible when districts invest in scalable, research-based, in-person academic support.
