About Andrew

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, San Diego with Latin honors in modern history. Soon after, I attended the University of Chicago with a full scholarship and obtained a Master of Arts in social sciences with a focus on modern Japanese history.

Through discussions of the afterlife in Ancient Egypt to the significance of World War II, I focus on a wide and deep understanding of the past as a whole. Like any form of knowledge, thinking historically takes practice. Since it is generally difficult to understand major events and great swaths of time covered in short classroom settings without a proper framework, I work with students to help them comprehend notions like contingency, context, and continuity, etc. This will equip them with a foundation of understanding history as a critical examination of human societies, and in turn, this will interlink disparate historical concepts in a meaningful fashion. With meticulous observation and reflective engagement, I have been able to pull forward a genuine passion for learning about the past from many students.

I have tutored elementary school to high school students in a variety of subjects with a particular focus on historical studies (social studies, American history, European history, world/global history, and its AP variants). I have also served as a teaching assistant at the University of Chicago to teach Japanese history to undergraduates.

In addition to historical studies, I have also tutored English and Japanese. At UCSD, I helped international students with English conversation and basic grammar. As a native Japanese speaker, I have also tutored students in Japanese language in different capacities. I know from personal experience that learning a foreign language can be quite frustrating and demanding at times. But with a combination of proper methods and extensive practice, these insurmountable challenges can transform into valuable opportunities of linguistic growth. I will help students cultivate a solid language core through exercises, so they can become proficient enough to continue their language endeavors on their own.

As a firm believer that all education is self-education, I calibrate each lesson for the individual, so they can go beyond the confines of a particular subject and apply themselves as self-sufficient and rigorous thinkers. My goal is to help you become knowledgeable and articulate enough to stand on your own.

I look forward to helping you actualize your goals!
