About Nettie

I love young people! I have been a teacher for over 30 years...education is my life’s work! Helping children succeed, watching them grow and learn, and reaching their fullest potential is my driving motivation! I think it’s so important to believe in yourself and to build up your confidence. When you realize that you are capable of reaching great heights...you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.

I teach my students to also strive to develop a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset means that you’re not afraid of challenges, that you see stumbling blocks as a springboard to developing mastery! To use an idiom...When the going gets tough, the tough get going! We dig deeper and we learn from our mistakes...we see “failure” as opportunities for growth...and we approach new things with an “I can” attitude...and if I can’t, I will try...

As a tutor, my goal is to guide students as they encounter these challenges in their coursework. I teach my students effective strategies that they can use in Reading and Math and in all of their subjects to help them to think critically and work independently. My students have learned the CUBES method in Math to help them to solve story problems and we learn how to use context clues and our knowledge of figurative language to help us in Reading. We work on comprehension and fluency and helping students to become confident readers and writers. Various note taking strategies are so important to older students to help them organize information and to grasp the main idea from complex texts. Sometimes the Common Core curriculum can be a challenge but we break down subject matter into chunks to make it easier to devour!

I have high expectations for my students and I encourage them to strive to always do their personal best. That’s what I bring to my classroom...that’s what I bring to the table when I tutor.
