As a mechanical engineer I have used math for many years. I can also relate it to the student so that they understand the basis of the math problems. When they ask, "Will I ever use this again?" I can give examples of how they will use it.
I've helped students go from failing one semester to passing by the end of the year. I've also been able to help students returning to college learn and understand math concepts to the point that they've received A's in college level algebra after being out of high school for ten years.
I do this by adjusting my teaching style to their frame of reference so that it makes sense to them and make the subject matter relevant to what they like and know.
My goal is to explain a concept well enough to a student so that I'm no longer needed and they can learn on their own.
