About Shelley

Hello, I'm Shelley! I recently graduated with a PhD. in Art History from Emory University. Through my years of teaching courses at various levels and in different subjects, I have discovered that my favorite part is working with students individually to help them achieve their academic goals.

I believe that the best way for students to gain a better understanding of complex or challenging material is through encouragement to dive in, make mistakes, present their thoughts and ideas, and above all ask questions! I always tell my students that there is no such thing as a "stupid" question, and without questions I cannot help them improve.

I have experience teaching (including one-on-one sessions) the fundamentals of archaeological theory and practice as well as their application in the Ancient Mediterranean and Ancient American contexts in introductory college courses.

Throughout my years teaching undergraduate students in a diverse range of Humanities courses, I have extensive experience in working with students one-on-one to improve their writing (especially in the expository/persuasive five paragraph format) and to ensure they gain a knowledge of proofreading, appropriate citation styles, and how to avoid plagiarism. I have spent a considerable amount of time working with students struggling with the shift from high school to college and foreign students new to the American system.

As a recent PhD. graduate in the field of art history, I have spent the past seven years immersed in all aspects of the discipline, including the methods of instructing undergraduate students in ways which assist them in retaining the material, increasing achievement in assessments, and gaining a greater appreciation for the subject. In several of the courses I assisted with, the students helped test-drive the questions and material for the new AP Art History course, and therefore I am familiar with the new scope of the course and the assessment process.

One of the most rewarding experiences of my life is helping students achieve their academic goals, and look forward to the opportunity of working with you! I will respond within 24 hours to requests for lesson scheduling and have a 12 hour cancellation policy. Please note that I will not provide assistance with take home exams or quizzes
