I have a Master of Arts in Teaching ESL/ESOL from SIT, the institution that started the Peace Corps, and an M.Ed. from University of Illinois at Chicago in Measurement Evaluation Statistics and Assessment. I've lived and taught in several places in the United States and the world including Hiroshima, Japan, Muscat, Oman (for eleven years!), Honolulu, Hawaii, and Houston, Texas. I currently reside in one of the most beautiful places in America: Boulder, Colorado. I've worked with students of all ages in both classroom settings and one on one for over twenty three years. Due to my travel and time spent helping refugees in Houston, Texas, I've worked with people from all corners of the earth and know how to function effectively within any cultural perspective. Most of my teaching has been teaching English as an additional language. Three things that make my teaching practice unique are: 1) I see your language ability as a muscle (in the brain) that needs stimulation and work and engage in tasks that work it out; 2) I can be present as a teacher who allows a student space to go through his or her mental process without fear of judgment; and 3) I see it as my task to supply any needed support when a student is searching for an answer, which will be a hint more often than the answer itself because chasing an answer is one way of exercising your language muscles, and an answer you find for yourself is much more likely to be retained.
