I have a life-long passion for learning. As a straight-A honors student throughout high school, an International Baccalaureate diploma recipient, an exchange student at Oxford University, an honors graduate from Amherst College, and now a graduate student in literature at Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English, I have a proven track record as an effective learner.

But my greater passion is helping others to succeed in their own learning pursuits. While in high school I tutored ESL students weekly at the local public library in various subjects. In college I was a Big Brother and served as a mentor and tutor to elementary-aged kids through that organization. I have served as a teacher and tutor in many different contexts since then.

I am currently on the faculty of a leading independent school in the South Bay. I teach English language arts — vocabulary development, grammar, literature and reading, and writing — to sixth and seventh graders.

I am available and willing to tutor in most humanities-based subjects, though I specialize in writing, literature, and history/social studies (I was a history major in college). I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds, including gifted children.

As an educator, my priority is to help students think and understand. It's not enough simply to know the right answers. It is far more crucial to know how to arrive at them and why they are right. That has been the secret to my own success as a student, and that is at the center of my teaching philosophy. I focus on explanation, on thinking through concepts and ideas, on talking through problems in understandable language in order to arrive at solutions.
