About Gary

Mentoring students is a passion I did not expect to cultivate during my studies at UCLA. As an engineering student, I engaged in competitions and projects with campus organizations such as IEEE and ACM to supplement my rigorous education in mathematics and science. I was also blessed to have the opportunity to join the electrical engineering team for UCLA’s EFLIN satellite mission. In order to support myself throughout college, I tutored college students in physics and English, and edited essays for my peers. I also tutored middle school and high school students privately in math, science and English. While I enjoyed working on projects directly related to my field, I discovered that I was well suited for teaching the subjects I was passionate about. After working as a software engineer for a year, I decided to shift my focus toward academic management and mentoring.

My work experience and accumulated knowledge in math and science has allowed me to provide real world examples to students struggling to grasp purely conceptual material.
While I am primarily a visual learner, I enjoy employing a variety of techniques to combine oratory, visual, and kinesthetic learning processes to teach students. I believe in my students’ desire to learn and capability and I recognize that their understanding will only improve through methods which allow them to learn using their strengths. Further, I strive to provide a comfortable and relaxed learning environment that facilitates an open space for questions and mentorship. I have had experience tutoring students with ADHD, which was a refreshing challenge. Helping students with special needs overcome personal challenges is an extremely rewarding experience, and I hope to have many more opportunities to do so.

As a final note, I would like to provide a few details about my personal life. I am a musician, actor, vegan, and avid fitness enthusiast. My hobbies which occupy the majority of my time outside of work are hiking, running, filming, and writing music. I value health and happiness above all else, and I firmly believe in the power of spreading positivity and goodwill to everyone. I also come from a culturally diverse family, and I have lived in South America and Asia for several years. My studies abroad in Peru helped me attain proficiency in Spanish, which also one of my favorite subjects to tutor. There is so much to learn in this world, which is one of reasons why I love teaching. I enjoy learning from my students and I will strive to continue learning for the rest of my life.
