About John

I am a Magna Cum Laude graduate (3.95 GPA) of the University of Washington (UW) with a BA in both Russian language/literature and linguistics. While serving in the United States Air Force, I graduated from the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey, California, a fifty-four-week Russian language immersion program. More recently, I received my certificate in professional editing from the UW, a seven-month course in proofreading, copyediting, and developmental editing. Combined, these experiences have taught me how to persevere both academically and personally; as a tutor and editor, I work to pass this wisdom on to my clients.

Since 2004, I have worked as a college English and ESL tutor, where I have always been one of the most requested tutors. Regarding English, I mainly tutor composition. I enjoy tutoring writing that showcases my clients' individuality. I believe our writing should not only reflect our understanding of the subject matter, but also who we are in relation to it. In my experience, teachers and professors more often give higher marks to those students who can inject their being into their writing than to those who rigidly stay within the lines. I am passionate about helping my clients express not only their understanding of the material, but more importantly, who they are.

Regarding ESL, I likewise tutor composition, but also grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. I also help students acclimate to the culture. Having lived as a foreigner, I understand the difficulties involved in adapting to a new way of life and language. I conduct weekly conversation groups to help students not only become better speakers of English, but also to help them feel more at home here in the U.S.

If you decide to work with me, I will create a safe, secure, and comfortable learning environment in which you can feel free to be yourself, to make mistakes without judgment, and to make progress with my genuine encouragement. I have an easy-going manner and sense of humor. I am in no way a prescriptivist: I do not overemphasize rules but encourage exploration and individual style. If you are looking for an English or ESL tutor, or an editor, please feel free to contact me. I offer a free first meeting to determine if we will be a good fit.
