While I am new to heytutor and the freelance tutoring world in general, I have had the pleasure of working formally with students one-on-one to meet their individual challenges in reading and writing for over 6 years. I am a Ph.D. in Philosophy with five years of experience teaching philosophy courses and an additional year of tutoring students one-on-one in Villanova University's Writing Center. My courses are writing-intensive and revolve around reading and analyzing difficult primary texts. I work closely with all of my students on the composition of their first essay, from concept to analysis, form and execution to spelling, grammar, and documentation.
By now you can see that my area of expertise, philosophy, is not the limit of my abilities as a tutor! If you don't need a tutor in philosophy, my skill set may still be ideal for you. Beyond tutoring in my primary subject area, I can provide university-level guidance in reading and writing.
Philosophy teaches essential critical thinking skills, for example, how to read and comprehend difficult text, how to compose a persuasive essay, or how to question and analyze an argument. This makes me a good choice for college admissions essays or difficult high school or college composition assignments. I can also assist in preparing for the verbal or analytical essay sections of standardized tests.
I think it is also essential to note my attitude, style, and approach to learning. I am positive, enthusiastic, and compassionate, and have a genuine interest in your success. When you notice a sea of red marks on your essay, don't feel defeated but dive-in; you will soon find that they are by and lare questions and provocations where I think your thought is promising, or refocusing the emphasis to a more productive end. (To be truthful, the comments aren't even likely to be in red, but blue.) It is my belief that we have much to learn from ourselves, and I endeavor to open up your thoughts, unfold your questions, and indicate the often unnoticed third way when it is available. In short, I hope to help you discover your own potential.
Send me a message describing the obstacle you are facing and I'll let you know what we can do together to overcome it. (And, if you want to learn something about philosophy - I can help you with that, too.)
