I’ve known Gene since we were in high school together and he was the editor of our high school newspaper, and the best writer in our class. We couldn’t wait for each new edition because Gene’s articles were witty and wise, and reminded us of Mark Twain. Over the years, he’s been a writing coach for me and for many other classmates, and his gentle prodding with “Socratic” questions has greatly enhanced our writing skills, clarity of thought and ability to present our ideas in a clear, coherent and logical manner but never to be boring. We’ve referred him to many people professionally who needed his help and he’s never disappointed – the more senior the person the better the reviews.

Gene was completing an emergency consulting assignment he’d been retained to do by our CEO on a critical marketing problem, and as COO of the company I attended his presentation of findings and had a chance to meet with him in person. While reading his report, I realized he had extraordinary writing skills and in a private meeting I asked him if he could help me with my writing challenges. He asked me to define as accurately as I could the aspect of writing that I found most problematic and I explained that my chief concern was finding a voice in which I would be certain I’d be getting through to my audience, be they members of my firm or outsiders. Our initial meetings required me to critique my own work considering the principles outlined in the two books and I very quickly found I was approaching my writing goals with a much clearer understanding of what I wanted to achieve and how best to do so.

My firm specializes in providing a unique set of data protection services to individuals and companies. Because of the technical complexity of this field the vocabulary is quite esoteric, a characteristic that impeded the comprehension of our marketing materials by a great many of our prospective clients and complicated the process of making sales. Very early in our work together he got me to see my materials from the perspective of readers unfamiliar with the technology and its language and he caused me to start composing my articles with a view to explaining the importance of each service in the client’s terms rather than in our jargon. Gradually our material became considerably more “user fri endly” and, as a direct consequence, we started to see a steady increase in sales. By resisting writing the materials for us Gene helped build our confidence as we started to write less threatening text ourselves.

My company provides state and federal tax filing help to individuals and companies and a whole range of tax advisory services across a broad range of complicated financial activities. We also have a website where we provide prospective customers descriptions of the fields we specialize in and the services we provide, much of which I had written myself. I had to admit that when I found myself reading my articles it felt like watching paint dry and my brain felt like it had been injected with a bucket of Novocain. He got back to me promptly with a question: “I see where you are in terms of your materials, tell me: Where do you want to be?” When I began to address this key question with his help I set a completely different set of objectives for my website m aterials and the articles began to take on a much more pragmatic and understandable tone. My website is now significantly “different and better” than those of our competitors and the growth of our client list confirms this fact.
