While most of my studies have centered around creative writing and Native American literature, I have over twenty-two years’ experience teaching composition and various genres of literature. In my beginning years of teaching, I also tutored students who needed to brush up on their writing skills for the essay portion of the Michigan State Teacher’s exam. Carefully, I would assess where a student’s strengths lie and what areas we needed to specifically focus. The exam had strict expectations, so I would be sure to cover all the topics by having the students write for 10 minutes, and then we reviewed the writing together.
As a professor, I have various methods of teaching. I am very engaged with my students, and I believe in focusing on the objectives of an assignment. Every student has positive aspects in her or his writing, so I try to highlight those as well. Certainly, you, as the student, will need to make a commitment to be fully engaged as well. If I’m just a proofreader, you will not learn anything, so you must come to me ready to work. I do have patience and a sense of humor as well, so I try to make the learning experience enjoyable.
I’ve taught a plethora of courses from the beginning English courses to advanced composition, as well as introductory literature courses and upper level courses as well. I currently teach online courses in graduate level composition. Furthermore, I can teach the elements of English, and I am currently studying for my TEFL 160-hour certification and also tutor TESOL students. My teaching experience is quite broad, so we can always discuss how and if I can help you with your specific needs, and we can discuss this during our first lesson. I’m willing to teaching online through Skype if you live outside of my area. I look forward to working with you!
